Apple Adds Streaming Movie and TV Service Watchever to Apple TV in Germany

As noted by The Next Web, Apple has added support for new movie and TV streaming service Watchever to the Apple TV in Germany.

Essentially a German version of Hulu launched by Vivendi this month, it offers local, European and international movies and TV series for €8.99 a month. Key features include the ability to choose between a German dubbed version of international movies, or the original. There is also a personal recommendation algorithm à la Netflix.

USA gets the Apple TV for less, but has more streaming options. Hopefully this is the start of opening up local options in all regions to balance things out.

For example, Apple TV in the UK should have BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4OD and Demand 5. Most connected devices do, including the iPhone and iPad.

A browser? How would you control it? With your iPad? You can airplay Safari to your Apple TV. So no need for that.

I think that's the reason there are no apps on the ATV. You need at least an iPod touch to control it. So you might as well use Airplay.

Not everyone that has an Apple TV has an iPad or some other several hundred dollar iDevice. All you would need is an inexpensive wireless keyboard.

For example, my mother in law has an AppleTV but doesn't have any other iDevices. Heck, she doesn't even have a smart phone.

I agree, I'd love an app store.

Since the Apple TV runs it's own OS, it has a different set of APIs. It's very time-consuming to make a secure public API. The API currently in use probably has all sorts of security holes and bugs that they haven't patched up or fixed yet, because it's unnecessary until it becomes public. It took a year for iOS to release it's first public API, and many years after to give it all the features.

If the Apple TV developers have the time and resources, they can do it. It's all up to Apple to put more money into this, and we'll have a public API. I just don't think Apple has been ready for it yet.

Apple TV IS iOS. The same thing in your iphones and ipads...except with a different UI and geared towards multimedia.

Just make an App Store.

Then all the iPlayer, 4od, Lovefilm, Amazon stuff would surely follow.

Amazon Instant Video, ...please. I get so much out of my prime membership, but to watch all the prime content on my big TV's without having to buy/boot another set-top box would be so nice.
That or enable apps, or Amazon could support airplay video in the ipad player.
So close on so many fronts....
I'd put an AppleTV in every room of my house if it had Amazon Prime support.
