Any competition to Google's search engine monopoly is welcome.

Nice! I’ve been finding ChatGPT super helpful as a developer lately, much more useful than Google search ever was. I haven’t tried their search yet but considering how bad Google has made their search in recent years, we have nowhere to go but up.

I still cannot find myself wanting anything to do with that company. Happily staying on the sidelines for a while.

Well, when I use chatgpt is always says it only has access to info stopping 2 years ago. Will this use up to date info?

Yes, that's the point, it accesses up to date web results rather than knowledge it's been trained on.

Googles does that too, and it will summarize total nonsense and provide a link to a page that doesn’t even contain the nonsense it’s summarising. I fail to see how any search tool is useful if it requires a bunch of extra work for me to research the results to make sure that they’re not BS… 🤯

I find AI-generated summaries useful when asking questions that don’t involve bias—questions with answers that remain the same no matter who you ask are definitely AI’s strong suit.

However, AI does not have the ability to independently reason or think like humans. It operates using complex mathematical models to predict and generate text based on patterns in the data it has been trained on. Essentially, AI determines the most statistically probable sequence of words or letters given the input it receives.

When AI produces unexpected or incorrect outputs, it isn’t “lying”; rather, it is generating responses based on probabilities and patterns, not intentional decisions or truths.

Some argue that today’s chatbot AI is essentially an advanced version of the autocomplete feature we’ve known for decades. The term “AI” is often used as a buzzword. In reality, there isn’t much difference between AI chatbots today and those from 5-10 years ago, with the main distinction being their ability to browse the internet in real time.

While being told a source that doesn’t exist is clearly not how these programs are intended to work, there’s a reason they are distributed as beta software to the public.

For all these reasons, it’s important to always review AI-generated summaries, as the AI has no understanding of what it’s saying or being asked.
