The feature is also available in Puerto Rico.

Apple said the following states have "signed on" to adopt the feature in the future:

  • Montana
  • West Virginia
  • Connecticut
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi

  • Utah

The feature will also work with Japan's My Number Card in the future, according to Apple.

Apple Wallet IDs can also be used to show proof of age or identity at select businesses and venues in the U.S., although Apple does not maintain a list of specific locations for this.

This way, when you get pulled over, you’re going to hand your unlocked phone to the police when asked for your license and registration. Not sure many lawyers think that’s a great idea.
That's not how this works - it works like Apple Pay where you tap the device on a reader and the license info is transferred across. You don't unlock or hand the device over. The reason the roll-out is so slow is likely because the states have to provide suitable readers to all their officers / TSA points.

Coming to Illinois starting 1/1/2025 BUT NOT to Apple Wallet. You will need to download a special app to download your digital license. In addition there’s a gotcha in the law that allows police to request the physical license which means you still have to carry your physical drivers license. Why even have a digital license then?

I agree it is a bad idea, but that is not what this is for. It is for identify verification at some TSA checkpoints at a handful of airports and for age verification at a handful of businesses. It is not a substitute for a physical ID card. Since I always travel with an ID anyway (my DL and passport card) and pack my phone in my carry on before getting to security, this digital ID is pretty useless to me at the airport. It would be helpful at the pharmacy, though, for picking up prescriptions that require ID since I already use my phone/watch to pay.
