Apple's Next iPad Pro Could Feature Ultra-Slim Bezels

Apple is considering LG Innotek's chip-on-film (CoF) technology for future iPad Pro OLED displays, a change that could potentially deliver slimmer bezels and more compact designs without sacrificing screen size.

Korean outlet The Elec reports that Apple is expected to approve or reject LX Semicon's display driver IC this month, which would work alongside LG Innotek's CoF technology. CoF technology attaches display driver chips to panels using heat compression on flexible film, sending signals to control individual pixels through thin-film transistors.

The combination enables tighter integration of the panel along the display's edges, which could end up shrinking the visible bezels and creating more screen real estate in the same device footprint. The combination might also offer more power-efficient signal processing, which would translate to better battery life, though this is more speculative.

Apple has exclusively relied on Samsung System LSI for display driver ICs in its OLED iPad Pro models launched last year. A switch to LG would also diversify Apple's supply chain while potentially reducing component costs through increased competition.

The report doesn't specify which iPad model the components are destined for, but DigiTimes reports separately that LX Semicon's entry into Apple's supply chain is related to iPad Pro.

The iPad Pro is rumored to receive an M5 chip in the second half of 2025. Future models could also feature landscape-oriented Apple logos and Apple-designed 5G modems by 2027. A foldable 18.8-inch iPad Pro could arrive as early as 2027.

The bezels of the iPads never bothered me and are perfectly fine. You have to hold them comfortably without unintentional inputs and too slim bezels won't help with that.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Apple Unveils the New iPad with Ultra-Slim Bezels — Because You Clearly Didn’t Want to Hold It Anymore

Cupertino, California — June 24, 2025 — Apple today announced the most revolutionary iPad yet: the iPad Pro Vanish, featuring ultra-slim bezels so thin, we legally can’t call them bezels anymore. In fact, we’re not even sure the screen has edges. It might be infinite. You’ll try to pick it up, and it’ll immediately slide onto the floor. Magic.

"We listened to our users — and promptly ignored their concerns about ergonomics," said Apple's Senior VP of Edge Reduction. “This iPad redefines what it means to accidentally tap everything while trying to hold it. It's like trying to hold a slice of light.”

The new iPad comes in four colors that are functionally the same but have slightly different names, including Starlight, Moonblush, Fog Mist, and Transparent Aluminum. Starting at just $999 (Magic Keyboard, Pencil, and basic satisfaction sold separately), it also introduces a groundbreaking new feature: EdgeGuess™ Technology, which guesses where your hand probably is and hopes for the best.

Key Features:

* Display That Refuses to Be Contained – At 13 inches, the screen now stretches corner-to-corner-to-your-soul.
* No Button, All Swagger – With nothing left to press or hold, you'll navigate entirely via interpretive gestures and passive-aggressive stares.
* AirGrip™ (Sold Separately) – A proprietary Apple ring you wear to hover-near your iPad to avoid touching it. Made of recycled courage.

"Is it practical? Not at all," says Apple CEO Tim Apple. “But it’s beautiful, and we know you are going to love it. You're welcome.”

The new iPad Pro Vanish will be available for pre-order this Friday at 5:01 a.m. PT.

Considering that Apple is yet to decide whether to approve the part or not, it looks like it will not be for the M5 iPad Pro.

Specs and final design for the M5 version would already have been locked in considering a launch in October 2025 or even April of next year. Also don't think Apple will release an updated iPad Pro with slimmer bezels immediately after a model with huge changes have been released, which was the M4.

So probably it will be for the M6 variant at the earliest.
